I am not going to pretend I watch any baseball until the playoffs come around, but one guy has dominated the news cycle recently: Angel Hernandez, an umpire, not even a player, besides the gambling scandal with Shohei Ohtani.
Now again, admittedly I don't watch much baseball, but it appears Hernandez might be the worst umpire ever. He just retired in the middle of the 2024 MLB season, which is probably a good thing.
According to MLB’s statistics and studies, he is not the all-time worst umpire in the MLB, but watch some videos of the calls he has made, and you might disagree. Even the announcers could not hide their amazement at the balls and strikes he would call.
Hernandez has been in the MLB for decades, starting in 1991. He officiated the World Series in 2002 and 2005, numerous League Championship Series, and even filed a lawsuit against the MLB in 2017 citing discrimination.
The criticism from coaches and players for this guy has been heavy. No compliments were given to this guy when his retirement was announced. The overall perception of Hernandez retiring is that the game will be better off.
