This debate about who is the best running back in the NFL isn't a debate. Christian McCaffrey is the best running back in football, and he has been in that conversation for the past few years.
He started his career with the Carolina Panthers, being drafted 8th overall in 2017 out of Stanford. At Carolina, he set franchise records, was selected to three Pro Bowls, and was First-Team All-Pro twice.
McCaffrey was traded to the 49ers on a Thursday midway through the 2022 season.
He wasted no time getting his name in the record books at San Francisco, setting the franchise record for most consecutive games with a touchdown (17) and the most rushing touchdowns in a season in 2023 (14).
In the 2023 season, he was the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He had 21 total touchdowns, over 2,000 yards from scrimmage, and led the NFL in rushing with 1,459 yards. The 49ers reached the Super Bowl but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
On Tuesday, he was rewarded with a two-year contract extension, which makes him the highest-paid running back in the NFL, averaging $19 million a year.
